Tasks for property maintenance include: mowing lawns, watering the plants and lawn, maintaining paths and flowerbeds, pruning shrubs and trees, planting flowers and bushes, spreading mulch, topsoil, and fertilizer, and installing landscaping features such as ponds, decks, arbours, and trellises. Additionally, removing debris such as dead leaves and branches is essential, along with preparing landscaped areas for winter by removing dead plants and applying antifreeze to pipes and sprinkler systems.
A successful applicant for a landscaper role in residential landscaping or commercial landscaping ideally possesses the following skills: artistic talent and a sense of aesthetics, good communication abilities and interpersonal skills, knowledge of the principles of horticulture, botany, and landscaping, creativity and imagination, physical capacity to work standing or crouching and to lift heavy loads (landscapers are often required to bend, kneel, and lift loads), and manual dexterity (landscapers often use hand tools such as shovels and rakes).
